Arp H.S. girls powerlifting regional medalists

Rarely does it occur when every team member earns a medal at a competition.

That's exactly what the Arp High School girl powerlifters achieved Saturday in Commerce.

All eight Lady Iron Tigers that qualified for the THSWPA Class 3A small school region 3 powerlifting meet came home with a medal, with five of them punching their ticket for the state competition next Thursday Mar. 13 in Edinburg.

As a team, Arp finished tied for second among the 22 participating teams, but wound up third based on the tiebreaker system.

Seven of the eight placed at least 3rd in their respective weight class, and no one placed any lower than fourth. The top two finishers in each weight division qualify for state along with anyone that achieves a qualifying total weight (based on their weight class) lifted from their three event exercises.

Presley Johnson qualifies for state

Junior Presley Johnson repeated as regional champion in her weight class, and will be looking to better her fourth place finish at state from a year ago. She also won best bench press on a light platform tying her personal best with a 190 lb. lift. Johnson tied her PR in the squat as well at 255 lbs. and put up a total of 670 lbs. on the day.

Juniors Lillie Haskins and Isabella Reagh, along with sophomore Aquira Hines finished as regional runner-ups in their respective weight divisions earning spots at the state meet.

LaKayla Dewberry & Aquira Hines qualify for state

Junior LaKayla Dewberry wound up third in her weight class, but her 875 lb. total was enough for her to advance.

Freshman Kinley Schminkey, and junior Alice Smith nabbed third place finishes in their weight divisions.

Nevaeh Gurley

Sophomore Nevaeh Gurley took fourth in her weight class.

The THSWPA Class 3A small school state meet takes place at 8:00 a.m. Thursday Mar. 13 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
